If you delete photos from iPhone, are they deleted from iCloud?
Yes—when iCloud Photos is enabled. Apple says that deleting a photo or video on one device deletes it from the other devices signed into the same Apple Account. If you want to preserve an item, export or back it up outside the synced iCloud Photos library before deleting it.
iCloud Photos is a synced library, not a one-way backup.
A change made inside the library—including deletion—can propagate to the other connected devices. Do not assume a photo remains safely “in iCloud” after you delete it from a synced iPhone. Check the setting and make a separate copy first when the item matters.
Check whether this iPhone is syncing Photos.
Open Settings and tap your name.
Tap iCloud, then tap Photos.
Check whether Sync this iPhone is enabled.
Open Photos and check the library sync status before making a large change.
If syncing is on, treat the library as one collection shown on several devices. If it is off, the photo may be local to this device, imported from a computer, or stored through another workflow. That does not automatically make deletion safe: first establish where the only good copy lives.
Optimize Storage removes pressure, not library items.
Apple distinguishes device storage from iCloud storage. With Optimize iPhone Storage enabled, full-resolution originals are kept in iCloud and the phone can retain space-saving versions when needed. The images remain visible in Photos and continue to use iCloud storage. This is different from deleting them.
If your goal is simply to regain device capacity, optimization may fit better than a deletion project. If iCloud itself is full, optimization does not create more iCloud capacity. Review Settings → General → iPhone Storage and Settings → your name → iCloud separately so you know which limit you are addressing.
Make a copy outside the synced library when necessary.
Before removing an irreplaceable photo or video, transfer it to a computer, external storage, or another backup location you control. Verify that the exported file opens and contains the expected quality. Copying to another album inside the same Photos library is organization, not an independent backup.
Swoof's boundary
Swoof adds a review stage, but it cannot change Apple's sync rule.
A photo marked upward goes into Swoof Trash first. You can undo the action, open the queue, and restore individual items before the final step. Empty Trash then requests deletion through Apple Photos. From that point, Photos, iCloud, and the current library configuration control the result.
Recently Deleted is a recovery window, not a backup plan.
Apple says deleted photos and videos normally remain in Recently Deleted for 30 days. They can be recovered during that period, but they can also be permanently removed sooner. With iCloud Photos, the deletion and recovery state can synchronize across devices. Someone using a Shared Library may face additional ownership rules for permanent deletion and recovery.
After a cleanup, open Recently Deleted only if you understand the consequence of permanently emptying it. Space reporting may also take time to update while Photos and iCloud process the change.
A safer pre-deletion checklist.
Confirm whether Sync this iPhone is enabled.
Identify whether the problem is device storage or iCloud storage.
Export irreplaceable originals outside the synced library.
Verify every item in Swoof Trash before emptying it.
Remember that Apple—not Swoof—controls Recently Deleted and synchronization.
Can I delete a photo from iPhone but keep it in iCloud Photos?
Not as an ordinary deletion inside a synced iCloud Photos library. Apple says deleting on one device deletes the item on the other devices signed into the same Apple Account. Export or back up the item outside that synced library before deleting it.
Is Optimize iPhone Storage the same as deleting photos?
No. Optimize iPhone Storage keeps full-resolution originals in iCloud and may keep smaller copies on the device. The photos remain in the synced library.
Can Swoof prevent iCloud from synchronizing a deletion?
